Livery Stable

The stable was the ninth building I made for Angel Creek. An interesting choice as there has yet to be a horse make it in to town, but a stable and corral take up a lot of room so it is well worth building one. It's based on the model that Gary Chalk made in Wargames Illustrated 160, but has some different features.

I start by drawing out the various components on a sheet of foam core and cutting them out individually marking out doors and windows.( I always have a few figures at hand to check scale.) I then assembled the walls, first with dress making pins to ensure that it went together properly, followed by all purpose adhesive. I stuck the basic walls to a mounting card base.

After I was happy with the basic construction, I started to add the balsa cladding to give the wood effect. I cut the balsa to size and then use a hard pencil to scribe on the planking. In the past I have cut individual planks but this is far too time consuming.

When the cladding was finished I was able to move onto the roof. The roof for this stable is tar & paper, made from thick card and balsa strips. The roof is in two parts, allowing me to open the office whilst leaving the main stable area covered. The main stable roof is reinforced with triangular supports to help it keep its shape. At this stage I also added the platform on the front, the lean to on the back of the office and finished the door and window frames.

The model was now ready for painting. The whole thing was sprayed black and then painted using a limited palette. I use Citadel acrylic paints, mainly Scorched Brown, Bleached Bone & Vomit Brown. Finishing touches included signs produced on my computer, and some lichen just to break up the base.
